Trusting the Machine Translation?!

“The teacher talked about race in class.” – Would you translate it to the German “Der Lehrer sprach über Rasse im Unterricht”? Prominent Artificial Intelligence translation tools do (e.g. googletranslate, deepL, chatGPT). By doing so they, firstly, ascribe the (grammatical) male gender to “teacher”. Secondly, it is not sensitive to the connotations and discourse associated with the history of “biological races” reflected in the German word “Rasse” which is different to using “race” as an identity category in English.

The use of Machine Translation is becoming more and more prevalent with advances in LLMs for people with varying degrees of language proficiency in the target language. This especially poses a problem for the translation of politically sensitive or loaded language. Typically, desired word choices are self-descriptors of (systematically) underrepresented or marginalized groups, which leads to biases in training data and outputs of AI translation tools. This Bachelor or Master thesis will focus on understanding user behaviour by addressing of the following questions:

• How much do users trust in machine translations?
• How much do users edit machine translations?
• How does user behaviour differ based on language proficiency?
